The Brevard-Wisdom-Rice House, alternatively known as the Brevard-Mahat-Rice House, at 1239 First Street, is best known by fans of gothic literature as the former home of Anne Rice. The transitional style townhouse contains both Greek Revival and Italianate elements. Historically called Rosegate for the rosette pattern on the fence (believed to be the precursor to the chain-link fence), it was originally designed by James Calrow in 1857 for merchant Albert Hammond Brevard, a wealthy merchant, at a cost of ,000.

The double galleries have Corinthian columns below and Ionic columns below, set between square pillars at the corners. The second owner, the Reverend Emory Clapp, who purchased the house from Bevard’s daughter in 1869, commissioned Charles Bride to add the hexagonal wing in 1869. They were designed to enlarge an existing room for use as the Episcopalian clergyman’s library. But Rev. Clapp found more pleasure in tobacco, and his library quickly became his smoking room. After Rev. Clapp passed away, his wife continued to occupy the house until 1934, enclosing part of a gallery and installing an elevator on the Chestnut St. side.

Rice purchased the house with her husband, poet-scholar Stan Rice, upon returning to the her native city from San Francisco in 1989. The author, who portrayed the City of New Orleans in her best selling Vampire Chronicles, which began with The Interview with a Vampire in 1976, used the house as a setting for her 1990 novel The Witching Hour. Rice spent her teenage year nearby at 2524 St. Charles Avenue, which inspired much of her novel Violin

Changing the Way We Die Wins the USA Book Award

(PRWEB) November 18, 2013

Changing the Way We Die: Compassionate End of Life Care and The Hospice Movement won the highest honor in the health: death and dying category of the USA Book Awards. This year’s category winners were awarded to mainstream and independent titles alike. Changing the Way We Die, by Sheila Himmel and Fran Smith, will publish in 2014, and works to chronicle the quiet revolution happening in the way we die. Almost half of all Americans now die in hospice care, often at home, and a vast industry has sprung up to meet the growing demand.

Once viewed with suspicion as a New Age indulgence or fringe religious practice, hospice has become a $ 14 billion-a-year business and arguably the most successful segment of health care in America. In Changing the Way We Die, award-winning journalists Fran Smith and Sheila Himmel investigate what hospice means to todays aging population and their families. Its the first book to take a sweeping look at the hospice landscape, reporting the stories of patients, caregivers and cutting-edge researchers, as well as the corporate giants that increasingly own this market.

More than 76 million baby boomers are starting to turn 65 and 97 percent of Americans want to be better informed about end-of-life care. Changing the Way We Die is a vital and uplifting resource for readers facing lifes most challenging moments.

What People are Saying about Changing the Way We Die:

“This beautiful book opens the lid on one of the most important treasures in our lives-how we can change the way we die. The book reminds us that we often can choose to enter the embrace of hospice, with its deep roots in the heart of compassionate care. Hospice in the United States has been a movement as well as a practice. Dedicated, sensitive professionals and volunteers bring love and care to those who are facing death, in their homes, hospital rooms, and freestanding hospices. The words of patients and hospice people that fill Changing the Way We Die reflect great wisdom and self-honesty.”

Joan Halifax, Ph.D, author of Being With Dying

Fran Smith has written for O: The Oprah Magazine, Redbook, Salon, Good Housekeeping, and many other newspapers and websites. A former John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University and Pulitzer Prize winner, she lives in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

Sheila Himmel is a Psychology Today blogger and the coauthor of Hungry: A Mother and Daughter Fight Anorexia. A recipient of many awards, she lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Lucy Kaplansky w/ Lilly Hiatt
Event on 2014-02-28 20:00:00
About:

She started out singing in Chicago bars. Then, barely out of high school, Lucy Kaplansky took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert, The Roches, and others. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was everyone’s favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact, The New York Times said it was “easy to predict stardom for her.” But then Lucy dropped it all.

Convinced that her calling was in another direction, Lucy left the musical fast track to pursue a doctorate in Psychology. Upon completing her degree, Dr. Kaplansky took a job at a New York hospital working with chronically mentally ill adults, and also started a private practice. Yet she continued to sing. Lucy was often pulled back into the studio by her friends, (who now had contracts with record labels) wanting her to sing on their albums. She harmonized on Colvin’s Grammy-winning Steady On, and on Nanci Griffith’s Lone Star State of Mind and Little Love Affairs. She also landed soundtrack credits, singing with Suzanne Vega on Pretty in Pink and with Griffith on The Firm, and several commercial credits as well—including “The Heartbeat of America” for Chevrolet.

Then Shawn Colvin—who was itching to produce a record—hooked up with Lucy, her ex-singing partner. They went into the studio, and it all came together. When Lucy’s solo tapes got into the hands of Bob Feldman, president of Red House Records, he was blown away. Suddenly, Lucy was back in the music business. She signed with Red House and started playing gigs. Red House released The Tide in 1994 to rave reviews, and within six months Lucy signed with a major booking agency—Fleming Tamulevich & Associates—and began touring so much it required leaving her two psychologist positions behind.

Lucy’s second album, Flesh and Bone (1996), was produced by Anton Sanko (producer of Suzanne Vega’s Days of Open Hand), and it clearly showed a performer and songwriter stepping into her own. Some of Lucy’s favorite singing partners joined her in the studio, including Jennifer Kimball (formerly of The Story), Richard Shindell, and John Gorka. Where The Tide had showcased Lucy’s formidable interpretive skills, Flesh and Bone emphasized her development as a gifted songsmith. The album is graced with eight absorbing original songs, as well as four sharp covers.

After releasing, The Tide, Lucy’s success took flight with back-to-back hit albums Ten Year Night and Every Single Day. Both received the AFIM award (Association For Independent Music) for best pop album of the year. Lucy’s rising popularity has led to appearances on the CBS Morning Show, NPR’s Weekend and Morning Editions and All Things Considered, Mountain Stage, and West Coast Live. Lucy also contributed her story to a unique book, SOLO: Women Singer- Songwriters in Their Own Words, which includes some of the best known women on the music scene today: Ani DiFranco, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Sarah McLachlan and others. She was also featured in Lipshtick, a collection of essays by NPR commentator Gwen Macsai, published in the fall of 1999.

In 1998 Lucy teamed with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form supergroup Cry Cry Cry, and recorded some of their favorite songs written by other artists. The resulting album, Cry Cry Cry (which The New Yorker dubbed “a collection of lovely harmonizing and pure emotion,” and to which Entertainment Weekly gave an “A” rating), was an astonishing success in stores and on radio. A national tour of sold-out concerts by the trio served to introduce Lucy’s luminous voice to a new audience. The Red Thread followed and marked Lucy’s tenth year (and fifth album) on Red House. It wove together themes of motherhood, home and the family with beautiful production.

Lucy’s new life as a mother has enhanced the emotional depth of her songwriting. Her 2007 release Over the Hills explored universal themes of love, joy, loss, and dreams for the future, through reflections on family. After the release of Over the Hills, The Boston Globe referred to Lucy as “becoming the songwriter laureate of modern city folk.”

Kaplansky’s voice has continued to remain in high demand by her peers. Her song “Guilty as Sin” was featured in the NBC television show Ed. In addition, she can be heard on recent releases by Bryan Ferry, Nanci Griffith, and on the Greg Brown tribute album Going Driftless (also featuring Ani Difranco, Iris Dement, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams and others).

In 2010 Lucy joined up with acclaimed singer-songwriters John Gorka and Eliza Gilkyson to record an album as part of new folk super-group Red Horse. Awash in gorgeous harmonies and simple acoustic production, the album features the singers performing each other’s songs. Red Horse has received rave reviews and was the number one album on Folk Radio for several months in 2010. Since the album’s release, the trio were interviewed on NPR’s “Weekend Edition” with Liane Hansen and appeared on NPR’s “Mountain Stage.”

In 2011 Lucy released an EP, Kaplansky sings Kaplansky, featuring songs written by her father, famed University of Chicago mathematician Irving Kaplansky, including live performances of the two of them performing together in California. This is Lucy’s first venture into 1940’s style swing, reminiscent of the work of Kaplansky’s former student Tom Lehrer. Lucy is also featured on a new Bob Dylan tribute album, A Nod to Bob 2, featuring her performance of the Dylan classic “Every Grain of Sand.” Lucy released “Reunion”, her seventh solo CD, in 2012. For this album, Lucy reunited with her impressive core of musicians–Buddy Miller, Richard Shindell, Jonatha Brooke, John Gorka, Eliza Gilkyson, Duke Levine (Mary Chapin Carpenter, J. Geils Band), Jon Herington (Steely Dan) and producer/drummer Ben Wittman (Paula Cole, Don Byron)–creating a true masterwork.

The title song “Reunion” celebrates Lucy’s pioneering immigrant grandmother and her journey from Poland to Toronto, where the matriarch and business woman founded the Health Bread Bakery chain in the early 20th century. Depicted on the album cover in a painting by noted political cartoonist Avrom Yanovsky (one of the original bakery workers and father to Lovin’ Spoonful’s Zal Yanovsky), the bakery was the center of the Kaplansky family’s life. Although raised in Chicago, Lucy attended many family reunions in Toronto, reuniting one last time with her cousins in 2011 after the passing of her parents, aunts and uncles.

“It’s inevitable that as you get older and your life deepens you find more ways of connecting to an even larger circle of people,” says Lucy. “This album is largely about reunions with family and deepening social connections with friends and audiences through my music. I find myself clearer about my priorities, my purpose, my politics and my faith.”

Like the title track, each song on Reunion tells its own unique story. Lucy and co-writer Richard Litvin connect us to our common humanity through songs of family, origins, loss and discovery–from watching parents pass on (“I’ll See You Again” and “Sleep Well”), to witnessing a daughter blossom (“Mother’s Day”), to chronicling the journey of an abandoned child refugee (the radio-friendly “Scavenger”). These poignant originals are woven with unique covers of Woody Guthrie/Slaid Cleaves, Eliza Gilkyson, Amy Correia and The Beatles. Together these tracks create a tapestry that is at turns deeply moving, joyful, meditative and rollicking.

Lucy continues to perform all over the world. When not performing, she lives in New York City, where she enjoys spending time with her husband and nine year-old daughter.

ABOUT LILLY HIATT:

Lilly Hiatt’s a young woman wise beyond her years. Listen. You’ll hear. Hiatt’s songs back equal measures edge (“3 Days”) and energy (“Big Bad Wolf”) with stunning lyrical elegance. Clear evidence: The Nashville resident’s buoyant Let Down. Hiatt’s seamless debut fortifies earthy (“Master”) and ethereal narratives (“Oh Mister”) with storytelling as sharp as a seasoned songwriter (“Young Black Rose”). Youthful restlessness guides the journey. “There was a self-loathing theme throughout all those songs, hence the title,” the 28-year-old explains. “It had a lot to do with being in the first half of my twenties and being in this transition from child to grownup. It’s kind of like hitting puberty again.”

If discovery defines early adulthood, Hiatt certainly spent fair time seeking out songwriters far and wide to shape her own vision. “John Prine’s always a good place to go for inspiration for writing,” she says. “I really like early Liz Phair and Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt and Neil Young and I’m obsessed with Pearl Jam.” Accordingly, the rapidly rising songwriter’s new collection soars with wild diversity. Hiatt moves and grooves between country-folk (“Championship Fighter”) and gnashing Crazy Horse rock and roll (“Angry Momma”) with an ease that boldly suggests all songs arrive branded within a single and uncompromising genre: Music.

“When people ask me, I usually end up saying I play ‘spacey country,’” she says, “but the lyrics and the band aspect are equally important to me. To me, it’s just singer-songwriter stuff with an emphasis on the band. I guess I’d put it in the indie or Americana or country category, but I’m just as big a fan of rock and roll. That’s what I’m trying to get at eventually.” Either way, Hiatt’s endless lyrical and musical searching scarcely wavers throughout Let Down.

Rewind “Knew You Were Coming.” Now, turn up the volume. Words dampen stereo speakers with tears so painful and pure. “And I felt like a woman, working and trying to fill in the blanks that come with someone dying,” she sings on the perfectly circular coming-of-age confessional, a song written as sharply as Lucinda Williams and sung as sweetly as Patty Griffin. “And I knew you were coming and I knew I was ready, but the hills were on fire and the heat was so steady.” Fighting through angst. Sounds like an Americana songwriting icon we all know whose composure, as Lilly sings, sometimes “turns to country gravel.”

His name: John Hiatt. Lilly’s bond with her father runs deep. “My dad definitely serves as one of my biggest inspirations,” she says. “I really look up to him. I draw from his music. He’s my hero and always has been and he’s very good for advice. When I was younger, he’d treat it more delicately but now he shoots pretty straight with me. He doesn’t hesitate to give constructive criticism. He’s really supportive and sweet and roots for me.” Her father’s irascible wisdom (“People Don’t Change”) frequently appears on the new album, but Lilly’s hardly a facsimile.

In fact, the collection undeniably shows that she’s an accomplished songwriter in her own right. After all, Lilly’s been writing original songs more than half her life (since age twelve). Let Down only serves as her first official declaration of personal independence and purpose. “To listen to Lilly, you can hear a young artist discovering herself,” says the abum’s producer Doug Lancio (Patty Griffin, Todd Snider, Jack Ingram). “She also has a terrific sense of humor, listens attentively and draws from diverse music, creating a style that is personal and distinctly her own.”

She’s ready to tell the world. “I finished this record over a year ago,” Lilly says. “I’m so emotionally attached to it. I’ve never made a whole record before and I felt really invested in the whole process. All I want to do is get on the road. If I can make any sort of living, even if I live in a tiny house, I would feel pretty great. I want to play live shows and share the record with anyone who wants to hear. I’ve worked in a coffee shop for six years and that’s fine, but I get restless and I like to get out.”

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 17, 2013

USA Book News, the premier online magazine featuring mainstream and independent publishing houses, announced the winners and finalists of THE 2013 USA BEST BOOKS AWARDS on November 14, 2013 and Dr. Pamela Antoinettes Letters to the Brokenhearted is among the elite group of finalists with awards in two categories: Best Book Cover and Self-Help: Relationships. Jeffrey Keen, President and CEO of USA Book News, said this years contest yielded over 1500 entries from mainstream and independent publishers.

Letters to the Brokenhearted has been called a life-changing sensation, “intriguing”, and an empowering book for women by readers and has managed to capture the attention of the big players like Publishers Weekly and Writers Digest. In its first nine months of publication, Letters to the Brokenhearted: Woman-to-Woman Advice on Refocusing, Rebuilding, and Reloving has now been recognized with three awards. The books first award Honorable Mention for Non-Fiction – was announced on June 22 at the Beach Book Festival in New York. Additionally, the book received positive reviews from Publishers Weekly and Writers Digest. Publishers Weekly described Letters to the Brokenhearted as an enjoyable self-help book with comforting, kind, and useful advice conveyed with a loving spirit. Writers Digest called Letters to the Brokenhearted a wonderful book with wisdom on every page.

In Letters to the Brokenhearted, Dr. Pam, as she is affectionately called by her readers, encourages women to refocus, rebuild, and relove after heartbreak. She masterfully lays out her own process of bouncing back, and quite realistically drives the point home that there are no easy quick fixes when significant relationships end, even if the departure was a speedy one. Dr. Pam carefully, yet entertainingly walks, and sometimes dances, the reader through the nitty gritty. It remains an honest, inspirational portrayal that stays away from the annoying great advice that one receives from well meaning friends and family. What ultimately sets this book apart is Dr. Pams step-by-step approach to examining the tiny missteps that may lead to big mistakes and how one may avoid getting into them in the first place. What is even better, she shares her personal victories and triumphs, which seem realistic and easy to relate to, motivating the reader to achieve actual, attainable results.

Letters to the Brokenhearted is an easy read, depending on where the reader is in her own personal journey. Readers have reported that at times, they find themselves nodding in agreement and moments later, gasping as they see their very lives perfectly depicted in print. It was like she had a direct window to my soul, said reader Kiya Bolds. A four-star male Amazon reviewer even stated that Dr. Pam’s personal stories and advice are equally applicable to men. This book is a must read. Letters To The Brokenhearted must be placed on the top of the pile!

Major publishing houses that contributed to this years USA Best Book Awards competition include St. Martins Press, Random House, Simon & Schuster, Penguin, John Wiley & Sons, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Hay House, and Llewellyn Worldwide.

Wollison-Shipton Building Pittsfield, MA Announces Leasing Of Offices To Psychotherapist And Author, Anna OBrien With More Pittsfield Office Space Still Available

Pittsfield, MA (PRWEB) November 19, 2013

Financial Firebird Corporation, in its capacity as manager of Pittsfield office leasing for the historic Wollison Shipton Building at 150 North Street, in the heart of the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, announces that it has entered into a rental agreement with psychotherapist and author, Anna E. OBrien.

Deeply interested in the wisdom of the unconscious, Anna has worked with unconscious communication for many years in her psychotherapy practice. In her newly released book, Hawk Wisdom: Self-Defense in the Marketplace, she shows how an understanding of unconscious communication patterns can help everyone from the everyday consumer to the corporate executive. After reading Hawk Wisdom, you will understand how to quickly assess bits of conversation that you hear while discussing a purchase or other transaction and use this information to your advantage.

Hawk Wisdom is rooted in the concept of dynamic pattern reading. Dynamic pattern reading is the ability to assess information which is presented unconsciously. Information about items to be purchased or deals to be made can be gleaned from stories, jokes and chit chat which people share at the time of the transaction. This important information generally goes unnoticed. Ms. OBriens book helps people to understand how to listen for, attend to and interpret this information. It is a fascinating concept and a valuable skill.

For information on where to purchase Hawk Wisdom as well as how to sign up for individual and group conferences on unconscious communication go to the hawkwisdom.com site.

The Wollison-Shipton Building, which recently celebrated 125 years since it opened on April 12, 1888, provides office and retail space at very reasonable rents in the heart of downtown Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Those leasing offices especially appreciate the absence of additional charges found at other buildings. Most Wollison Shipton Building tenants pay no extra fees for heat, air conditioning, electricity, gas, common area maintenance or insurance, real estate taxes or even high speed internet service. In addition to those services tenants receive use of a common conference room all included in the rent.

Besides local businesses who may wish to lease office space in Pittsfield, MA companies from out of town should think about Pittsfield in a few different instances. When looking for a place to house back office operations, tenants from New York City or downtown Boston may find the rents in Pittsfield 5 times less to 10 times less than those rents in those large cities. Employee costs in Pittsfield end up substantially lower than in a large city as an extra benefit. Those looking for a virtual office may find Pittsfield offers features to meet those needs too. Business needing an occasional meeting place such as a law firm needing to meet with clients or take a deposition every now and than can make arrangements for space on a per use basis as well. For larger gatherings or presentations the Wollison-Shipton Building offers Pittsfield meeting facilities for close to 100 people either with or without food service from Pancho’s Mexican Restaurant located right next to the event room.

With low rent, bonus services, long term ownership, onsite management and nicely renovated space the historic Wollison Shipton building stands out as a top choice for Pittsfield office space.

St. Louis Feds Bullard Offers Perspectives on the Macroeconomic Situation during 2008

Rogers, Ark. (PRWEB) November 21, 2013

Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard discussed The Notorious Summer of 2008 on Thursday at an event hosted by the University of Arkansas Center for Business and Economic Research.

During his presentation, Bullard offered some perspectives on the nature of the macroeconomic situation during 2008, when the U.S. economy was suffering in the aftermath of a substantial financial panic. He noted that the summer of that year has developed a notorious reputation because it preceded the September 2008 collapse of two large financial firms, Lehman Brothers and AIG International, even though the financial crisis had been underway for more than a year at that point. The fact that the crisis had been continuing for a year without turmoil in financial markets suggested more financial stability than actually existed in the system, Bullard stated, adding that there were no clear signs that many financial firms were about to fail catastrophically.

He noted that in August 2008, the one-year anniversary of the beginning of the crisis, it appeared that the U.S. had weathered the crisis reasonably well and that continued slow growth was likely. However, the effects of the commodity price boom that began during the preceding year contributed to a slowing economy during the third quarter of 2008, he said. This greatly exacerbated the financial crisis and led to multiple financial firm failures.

Fed Easing

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) recognized the crisis in August 2007 and reacted using conventional tools, Bullard noted. In particular, the FOMC lowered the federal funds rate target substantially between September 2007 and March 2008 (from 5.25 percent to 2.25 percent).

They have performed and broadcast extensively across the UK, Europe and America as well as further afield from their base as Quartet in Residence at the University of Warwick.

The rare combination of maturity and freshness which characterises the Quartet’s performances is often singled out by reviewers:

“Here the playing is so brimful with enthusiasm and commitment, and at the same time so infused with the accumulated wisdom of three decades, that the music simply reinvents itself as it should”. (The Strad)
